U4gm's D2R Nef Rune Guide to Nadir and Smoke
Nef is an early rune worth keeping, but it isn't an automatic upgrade on its own. In D2R, its clearest uses are Nadir and Smoke, two Runewords that offer different ways to improve your gear. When you're comparing possible upgrades or browsing D2R Ladder Items, think first about the slot that needs help and whether you have the right base for the recipe.
What Runewords use Nef in D2R
Nef goes into Nadir with Tir, in that order, using a two-socket helm. For Smoke, pair Nef with Lum, also in that order, in a two-socket body armor. These recipes turn a modest rune into a more complete equipment choice, so the base and the other rune matter just as much as Nef.
Nadir is an option for a helm slot, while Smoke is an armor choice with a stronger emphasis on defense. That difference matters in a real playthrough: you're not choosing between two identical upgrades, but deciding which slot can better solve the problem you're facing. Keep the intended item type in mind before you spend runes.
Should you make Nadir or save Nef for Smoke
Nadir can be a practical stopgap when your helm is weak and you have the matching base and Tir ready. It gives you a way to put Nef to work without waiting for a different armor setup. If your current helm already does its job, though, there's no need to craft Nadir just because the rune is sitting in your stash.
Smoke is worth considering when your body armor needs to contribute more to staying alive. Its defensive bonuses include resistance support and faster hit recovery, which can matter as incoming damage becomes harder to manage. Since Smoke also needs Lum, weigh the whole recipe against your current gear instead of treating Nef as the only cost.
For either choice, look at what is actually causing trouble. If you're struggling to stay upright, a defensive armor upgrade may help more than replacing a serviceable helm. If the helm is the weak link, Nadir can make sense as a temporary answer. Your best use of Nef depends on the gap in your setup, not on a fixed rule about which Runeword is always better.
How do you use Nef without wasting it
Check the base before inserting anything: Nadir needs a two-socket helm, and Smoke needs a two-socket body armor. Use a nonmagical base that matches the recipe, then place Nef first and the second rune after it. A wrong item type, socket count, or rune order won't make the intended Runeword.
It's also worth asking how long you expect to keep the item. A base that fits your character and current needs is more useful than a craft made only to clear a rune from storage. Nef is most valuable when the finished piece fills a real gap; if your gear is already covering that slot, holding the rune for a better opportunity is a sensible call.
Nef is a useful early crafting option because it connects to both Nadir and Smoke, but those choices serve different slots and needs. Check your gear, confirm the recipe and base, then decide whether to craft now or save the rune.
