Recent research has uncovered a novel method of browser fingerprinting called adbleed, which exposes a significant privacy vulnerability. This technique exploits country-specific adblock filter lists, a commonly used tool to improve browsing experience, to partially identify users even when they are connected through anonymity networks such as VPNs or Tor.

The innovative proof-of-concept, created by independent security researcher Melvin Lammerts and showcased at adbleed.eu, demonstrates how the interplay between localized adblock rules and client-side timing measurements can reveal a user’s probable geographic location or language setting. This finding introduces a fresh threat vector into the realm of browser fingerprinting, supplementing traditional identifiers like screen size, font choices, and time zone data.

Recent research reveals a novel fingerprinting method that compromises VPN anonymity by detecting regional adblock configurations within a user’s browser. This approach involves executing specialized JavaScript code that examines whether certain country-specific filter lists are active, such as EasyList Germany, Liste FR, or EasyList Italy.

Popular adblock extensions like uBlock Origin, Adblock Plus, AdGuard, and Brave Shields depend on collaboratively maintained rule sets—most notably EasyList—that block known ad and tracker domains. Users often enable additional regional filters during setup or by default, which target localized advertising networks and trackers unique to specific countries.

By probing for these regional filters, the technique can identify a user’s geographical adblock preferences. Since such filter lists are often tied to specific regions, their presence serves as a fingerprint, subtly revealing the user’s location. This process undermines the presumed privacy benefits of VPNs, as revealing regional adblock configurations can be exploited to infer user location and identity, thereby challenging the effectiveness of existing anonymity measures.

The AdBleed technique bypasses VPNs by exploiting adblocker filter lists,

revealing a user's regional settings through browser-side detection.

It functions by measuring load times for small resources from localized domains,

distinguishing between immediate blocks and delayed network requests.

By subtracting general filter list entries, the method avoids false positives,

focusing solely on country-specific adblock rules.

This approach works across various adblockers and browsers,

operating independently of IP addresses or network routing.

Users seeking anonymity face difficult trade-offs,

as disabling regional filters may increase exposure to local trackers.

Potential countermeasures include enabling multiple unrelated country lists,

though this could disrupt normal browsing functionality.

Developers might implement context-aware filtering to mitigate the issue,

applying regional rules only when geographically relevant content is detected.
