Last weekend saw a mix of impressive and modest performances across international markets for recent Hollywood releases. The "Men in Black" sequel debuted strongly, earning $11.7 million across five territories from over a thousand screens. In Japan, the film opened with $5.3 million on 537 screens, matching the first installment’s opening but ranking as the 18th best opener in the country’s history. However, its potential was somewhat limited by the upcoming release of "Star Wars: Episode II — Attack of the Clones," which drew attention during its second weekend.

Elsewhere, "Men in Black II" found greater success. Australia contributed $3.5 million on 386 screens, ranking eighth all-time for the market. Russia set an industry record with $1.8 million on 150 screens. New Zealand saw a $730,000 debut on 65 screens, surpassing the original’s figures by 18% and becoming the country’s fifth highest opening. Colombia added $340,000 from 37 screens, marking the seventh biggest opening there.

Meanwhile, the collaboration between Steven Spielberg and Tom Cruise in "Minority Report" delivered a strong international performance, grossing $12.7 million from 11 countries. In the UK, the film brought in $6.8 million on 426 screens, including previews. Its releases in Hong Kong and Thailand also performed well, earning $1.1 million and $860,000 respectively, with the latter being the distributor’s second best opening ever in the region. Other notable markets included Sweden with $886,000, Singapore with $569,000, and Malaysia with $279,000. Just three weekends into its international rollout, "Minority Report" has accumulated $21 million.

"Star Wars: Episode II — Attack of the Clones" continued its global dominance, earning $10.1 million from 3,600 screens, raising its international total to $227.5 million. In Mexico, the film earned $4.4 million on 715 screens; in Brazil, $1 million on 475 screens; and in Chile, $448,000 on 53 screens. South Korea set a new record with $2.7 million on 165 screens, making it the fourth highest-grossing market for the film.

"Spider-Man" also made a significant impact, debuting in the Netherlands with $1.1 million on 128 screens, the second highest opening in Sony’s history after "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone." Globally, the superhero film has earned $15.6 million from nearly 6,000 screens, pushing its total to $326.1 million.

Disney’s "Lilo & Stitch" led the charts in Germany with a $2 million opening on 686 screens, topping a sluggish local market. It also opened in Spain with $1 million on 265 screens, trailing behind "Spider-Man," and garnered $244,000 in Austria and $190,000 in Israel, where it ranked third among animated films. The film continues to perform well in Mexico, with a total of $5.6 million, as well as in France and Brazil, with $3.7 million and $1.3 million respectively.

Other animated releases like "Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron" earned modestly in various markets. It brought in $1 million in the UK on 391 screens and $195,000 in Taiwan, where it competed with "Scooby-Doo" and "Snow Dogs." Despite stiff competition, "Spirit" has accumulated $1.2 million in Australia and $3 million in Germany over its run.

In Australia, "Bend It Like Beckham" opened with an excellent $594,000 on 62 screens, the highest per-screen average of the period, outperforming "Billy Elliot," which debuted on 182 screens. The film’s international journey highlights the diverse reception of recent Hollywood hits around the world.
