Why are in-game text threads so often terrible?

Honkai: Star Rail, however, treats its in-game messages like a playground.

No major rewards, no sidequests unlocked, just silly peeks into what these characters do when you’re off exploring. Yesterday Pela tried to gift me an artbook… until she realized she’d messaged the wrong person. I was simultaneously annoyed and charmed. That one-line mix-up made my day more than any drop or banner ever has.

All of this adds up: a protagonist with flavor, clear chemistry across the cast, and small writing flourishes that elevate otherwise routine interactions. Even the pull animations have a manic energy that matches the tone.

I hope Hoyoverse keeps leaning into this.

Games don’t always need stoic, neutral leads—sometimes I want to be a petty, gleeful goblin in my messages, and Star Rail gives me that room to be a brat, a friend, and a ridiculous teammate all at once. Other titles could learn a lot from letting players actually banter with their virtual crew.
