The three new maps are gripping, but the real game-changer is how suspects now behave and how much more you can interact with the environment. If you thought this tactical FPS was already punishing, get ready for something even more unpredictable.

Smarter enemies who work together

Suspects no longer act alone. They've been given real squad behaviour: some try to lure you into traps, others circle around to distract you, and they'll call out your position to the whole building. I learned this the hard way on Mirage at Sea, a luxury yacht turned active-shooter nightmare. After a firefight in a stairwell, one suspect slipped away and immediately alerted his buddies. Before I knew it, my team was wiped and I was the last person standing, cornered and shot dead. The AI's coordination turned what should have been a routine sweep into a lethal ambush.

Using the environment like never before

You can now exploit your surroundings in clever ways. Broken windows, holes in walls, and cracks let you use the mirror gun for intel or bounce flashbangs and grenades into rooms without exposing yourself. This is especially effective on 3 Letter Triad, an abandoned island hotel that art director Mark Ranson designed with “light, shadow, and silhouettes” to keep you on edge. I was able to stun a group of suspects through a wall crack and then feed intel to my teammates.

Three maps, three distinct playstyles

The DLC offers something different on each map. Mirage at Sea is tight and chaotic—ideal for fast, aggressive clears. Leviathan, an oil rig seized by eco-terrorists, demands a more methodical approach as you try to secure a hostage situation. The eco-terrorist premise feels a bit out of place with Ready or Not's usual realism, but it works as an excuse for a fresh layout. On Leviathan, I chased a yelling woman who fled through a gap in pipes I couldn't fit through. She eventually surrendered, but I still wasn't sure if she was a hostile or just a grumpy worker. That ambiguity keeps you guessing.

Then there's 3 Letter Triad, my favourite. With over 20 suspects roaming a massive, multi-level hotel, it's a sprawling action-movie firefight that still rewards careful planning. I barely scratched the surface of how to exploit its architecture, but the potential is huge.

The Dark Waters DLC makes every mission feel more alive and more dangerous. After just a few hours, I'm already itching to dive back in and adapt to whatever the new AI throws at me.
