The shambling staff and patients each have unique behaviors and vocalizations that tell their own story—tipsy partiers clutching wine bottles, a patient muttering about loud noises while dragging an IV stand, others howling when I flicked on the lights and scrambling to turn them off. This individualized enemy design makes every encounter memorable and reduces the series’ reliance on overabundant journals for exposition. Then came Leon’s turn. For about 20 minutes I stepped into his steel-toed boots for two action-heavy sequences, and the contrast with Grace’s tense stealth is night and day. Leon can go in guns-blazing, and his melee game is brutally satisfying—a hatchet to the dome sends fountains of blood flying, and a chainsaw sweep can mulch multiple enemies in one go. This is easily the goriest Resident Evil I’ve ever played. Deaths happen in-engine and vary by situation: during one early mistake, a zombie grabbed the chainsaw I’d dropped and sliced me in half, Darth Maul-style, the spinning blade carving through a pile of limbs. The blood and viscera are everywhere—buckets of gore, mangled corpses with eyes and guts hanging out—but it never crosses into torture-porn territory. It’s the kind of over-the-top violence that makes you wince and grin at the same time.

Immaculate Gore and Glory

Beyond the gore, Requiem is a visual stunner. Capcom’s attention to small, unglamorous imperfections makes everything feel real: the Civic Care Center’s wooden trim is nicked and dented beneath layers of landlord paint; Leon’s leather jacket looks supple and lived-in, his stubble patchy and growing in irregular directions; Grace’s face goes dewy and pale during cutscenes, and I swear I could see a cold sweat break out.
