Reading a Care Label Properly, and When to Ignore It
Care labels are legally required to list one safe method. They aren't required to list the best one, or the only one, which causes a fair amount of confusion.
"Dry Clean Only" is a manufacturer protecting itself. Sometimes it's genuine, on structured tailoring, on anything with fusible interlining, on silk, and on most beading. Often it's caution applied to a garment that would survive a gentle hand wash. The problem is that finding out which costs you the garment.
"Dry Clean" without "Only" is a recommendation rather than a rule. "P" or "F" in a circle tells the cleaner which solvent to use. A crossed-out circle means no dry cleaning at all, which matters on some coated fabrics and certain synthetics.
Where the label runs out, local conditions take over. Nothing on a tag accounts for salt exposure or the humidity that makes dry cleaning in Miami Beach a different proposition than it is inland.
When a label is ambiguous or missing, a good dry cleaner in Miami Beach will identify the fiber and construction rather than guess.
