Chronic Illness and the Kitchen: Spending Energy You Do Not Have

If you live with a condition that limits your energy, you already know the arithmetic. There is a finite amount in the day, every task costs some of it, and spending too much today means borrowing from tomorrow at a punishing rate.

What people without that experience struggle to grasp is how expensive cooking is in that economy. It is not one task. It is a chain of them, and any link can take the whole day down.

The hidden cost of a home-cooked meal

Deciding what to eat. Checking what is in the house. Writing a list. Travelling to a supermarket. Walking it. Carrying bags. Unpacking. Standing to prep. Standing to cook. Monitoring. Serving. Then washing up.

For someone managing ME/CFS, long COVID, MS, rheumatoid arthritis, fibromyalgia, inflammatory bowel disease, cancer treatment or a dozen other conditions, that chain can consume an entire day’s capacity and leave nothing for work, relationships or rest.

Which is how people in this situation end up eating badly. Not through ignorance. Through a rational decision to spend limited energy elsewhere.

The trap

Poor nutrition makes most chronic conditions harder to manage. Low energy intake worsens fatigue. Inadequate protein accelerates muscle loss during periods of inactivity. Iron deficiency compounds exhaustion.

So the energy saved by not cooking is partly spent later in worse symptoms. It is a genuine bind, and the standard advice to cook nutritious meals from scratch misses it entirely.

Break the chain, do not power through it

The useful approach is to look at the chain of tasks and remove links, rather than trying to do the whole thing on a good day and crashing.

Remove the shopping. Online grocery delivery eliminates travel, walking and carrying in one move. For many people this is the single biggest saving available.

Remove the prep. Pre-chopped vegetables, frozen diced onion and garlic, tinned legumes, bagged salad, pre-cooked rice. Every one of these buys you energy at a modest financial cost.

Remove the standing. A perching stool. A slow cooker. A multi-cooker that does everything in one pot.

Remove the cooking entirely on bad days. This is the one people resist and it is the most important. Keeping ready meals nz suppliers deliver frozen to your door means a proper hot meal exists on days when the chain is simply not available to you. Single portions in the 300 to 375 gram range are an actual adult meal rather than a token one, and reheating is one task instead of nine.

Remove the washing up. Meals that heat in their own tray are not a small thing when standing at a sink is the hardest part of the day.

Cook in the good windows

Where there are better days, use them for volume. Cook once, portion generously, freeze flat, label everything.

The goal is to move cooking out of the bad days entirely, so that bad days require only reheating.

On the guilt

A great deal of energy gets spent feeling bad about not cooking properly, and that energy comes out of the same finite budget.

There is no moral content in how a meal was produced. A reheated meal that gets eaten is better nutrition than a home-cooked meal that was too expensive to attempt.

Asking for help specifically

People offer to help and then wait to be told what to do. Give them concrete tasks: a standing grocery order, a batch of meals in the freezer, a lift to an appointment, someone to do the dishes.

If your condition relates to an injury covered by ACC, meal support is sometimes available through a rehabilitation plan, which is worth raising with a case manager.

The frame that helps

You are not failing at cooking. You are rationing a scarce resource, and choosing not to spend it on food preparation is a legitimate allocation.

Protect the energy. Buy back the links in the chain where you can.
