Downlight vs Panel Light: Which Is Better for Your Space?
Downlights are better for homes and premium spaces because they give focused, glare-controlled light and a cleaner ceiling. Panel lights are better for offices, utility areas and tight budgets because they spread even, flat light over a wide area at a lower cost. Most well-designed Indian homes use downlights in living spaces and panels only where uniform task light matters.
Walk into two identical apartments. One has slim panel lights in every room. The other has a few recessed downlights placed with intent.
The second one looks more expensive, even though it may have cost only a little more. This guide explains why, and helps you decide what goes where.
Who is this guide for?
- Homeowners choosing ceiling lights for a new home or renovation
- Architects and interior designers specifying lights for false ceilings
- Office and clinic owners deciding between panels and downlights
- Anyone comparing quotes where one says "panel" and another says "downlight"
What is the difference between a downlight and a panel light?
A downlight is a recessed fixture that directs light downward in a controlled beam, while a panel light is a flat fixture that spreads light evenly across a wide area.
A downlight has a reflector or lens that shapes the beam. Better models set the LED deep inside the housing, so you see the light on the floor, not the source in your eyes.
A panel light has LEDs behind a flat diffuser. In India, "panel light" usually means a slim round or square fixture for homes, or a 2x2 ft panel for office grid ceilings.
| Feature | Downlight | Panel light |
|---|---|---|
| Light pattern | Focused beam (typically 24°–60°) | Wide, flat spread (around 110°–120°) |
| Glare control | Good to excellent with deep-recessed optics | Moderate; the whole surface glows |
| Ceiling look | Clean, minimal points of light | Visible bright squares or circles |
| Dimming | Widely available | Available but less common in budget models |
| Best for | Homes, hospitality, retail, feature areas | Offices, corridors, utility rooms |
| Typical cost | Higher | Lower |
Which is better for homes?
For most living spaces, downlights are the better choice because they create depth and comfort instead of flat brightness.
Panel lights flood a room evenly. That sounds good, but it removes shadow, and shadow is what gives a room character. A living room lit only by panels often looks like an office after dark.
Downlights let you place light where it matters: over the sofa, along a wall, above a dining table. Combined with cove or profile lighting, they create the layered look you see in luxury homes.
Planning a new home in Noida or Delhi NCR? At Brightmatic, we typically use anti-glare downlights in living rooms and bedrooms, and keep panels for utility areas and storerooms.
Which is better for offices?
For open offices, panel lights are often the practical choice because they deliver uniform task light across desks at a lower cost.
The catch is glare. Cheap panels can be harsh on screens and eyes over an eight-hour day. The European standard EN 12464-1, widely referenced in Indian offices, generally recommends a glare rating (UGR) of 19 or below for office work. Look for panels rated UGR <19, and read our UGR guide to understand why it matters.
For cabins, meeting rooms and reception areas, downlights or linear lights look far more premium. See our office lighting design guide.
Which light should you use in each room?
Use downlights where people relax and panels where people work at a fixed spot.
| Space | Our recommendation | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Living room | Downlights + cove/profile | Depth, mood, no glare from the sofa |
| Bedroom | Anti-glare downlights, dimmable | Comfortable when lying down |
| Kitchen | Downlights + under-cabinet strips | Shadow-free counters with a clean ceiling |
| Bathroom | IP-rated downlights | Moisture protection, focused light |
| Open office | UGR <19 panels | Even desk lighting at scale |
| Cabin / meeting room | Downlights or linear lights | Premium look, better for video calls |
| Corridors, store, utility | Panels | Low cost, even light |

How much do downlights and panel lights cost in India?
Panel lights indicatively cost Rs 150 to Rs 4,000 per fixture, while downlights range from Rs 300 to Rs 10,000 or more, depending on quality and optics.
Indicative estimates only, not actual quotes. Installation is extra.
| Fixture | Basic | Mid-range | Premium |
|---|---|---|---|
| Slim panel (home, 6–24W) | Rs 150 – 500 | Rs 500 – 1,200 | Rs 1,200 – 2,000 |
| 2x2 ft office panel | Rs 1,000 – 1,800 | Rs 1,800 – 3,000 | Rs 3,000 – 4,000 (UGR <19) |
| Downlight | Rs 300 – 800 | Rs 1,200 – 3,500 (anti-glare, CRI 90+) | Rs 3,500 – 10,000+ (architectural) |
The real comparison is cost per room, not per fixture. A living room might need eight panels or ten downlights, so the gap per room is usually much smaller than the per-fixture price suggests.

Is a premium downlight worth the extra cost?
- Is it expensive? Per fixture, yes. Per room, the gap is smaller than most people expect.
- Does it save energy? Both are LED. Efficiency depends on the product, not the type. Look for BEE star labelling where it's available.
- What can go wrong? Cheap downlights glare and cheap panels yellow. Check CRI, optics and driver quality either way.
What mistakes should you avoid?
- Putting panel lights in every room for "maximum brightness"
- Choosing downlights with the LED flush at the surface, which causes glare
- Ignoring CRI (aim for 90+ at home; see our CRI guide)
- Mixing colour temperatures in the same room
- Planning fixtures after the false ceiling is closed
- Buying unbranded panels with no warranty on the driver
A common myth: more light means a better room. In reality, the best rooms have contrast, with brighter and softer zones working together.
Expert recommendation from Brightmatic
For homes, we recommend deep-recessed, anti-glare downlights with CRI 90+ and dimmable drivers, layered with cove or profile lighting. Use panels only in utility areas, storerooms and corridors.
For offices, use UGR <19 panels over workstations and switch to downlights or linear lights in cabins, reception and meeting rooms.
Brightmatic plans architectural lighting with fixtures from brands like Lafit, so every room gets the right light, not just more of it. Crafting Brighter Lives.
