The Defensive Force Who Put Buffalo on the NFL Map
Bruce Smith didn’t simply chase quarterbacks; he changed how offenses had to prepare for an entire game. With his explosive first step, powerful hands, and relentless pursuit, Smith became one of the most feared defensive ends in NFL history. Buffalo selected him first overall in the 1985 NFL Draft, and he went on to spend 15 seasons with the Bills, establishing a standard for pass rushing that few have matched.
Smith recorded 171 sacks in a Buffalo uniform and finished his career with an NFL-record 200 sacks. He was named NFL Defensive Player of the Year twice and earned 11 Pro Bowl selections as a Bill. His presence helped anchor the defense during Buffalo’s run of four consecutive Super Bowl appearances from 1990 through 1993. Though the Bills fell short of a championship in those games, Smith’s individual dominance became a defining part of that era.
A Bruce Smith Jersey celebrates one of the most accomplished players ever to wear Buffalo colors. His legacy lives in the records, the Hall of Fame recognition, and the way he made offensive tackles rethink every pass-blocking assignment. For Bills fans, No. 78 represents a period of franchise history when the defense had a true game-wrecker on the edge.
