In a groundbreaking move, Netflix has commenced filming on its first-ever original series produced entirely in Germany, titled "Dark." The production kicked off in Berlin, with principal photography scheduled through March across various city locations.

Directed by Baran bo Odar and Jantje Friese—who previously collaborated on the acclaimed film "Who Am I: No System Is Safe"—the series marks their return as co-creators and showrunners. Both are also serving as executive producers alongside industry veterans Quirin Berg, Max Wiedemann, and Justyna Müschen. Nikolaus Summerer is attached as director of photography.

Set in a contemporary German town, "Dark" explores the mysterious disappearance of two children, unraveling complex relationships within four families. Over ten episodes, the narrative delves into hidden secrets and a surprising connection to events in 1986, creating a layered family saga with a suspenseful twist. The story aims to captivate audiences worldwide, debuting exclusively on Netflix in late 2017.

This series signifies Netflix’s commitment to expanding its international original content, particularly in Germany, where it aims to connect with local viewing habits and push creative boundaries. As Erik Barmack, Vice President of International Originals at Netflix, expressed, "Bo and Jantje have a proven track record of crafting compelling thrillers, and "Dark" exemplifies their exceptional storytelling skills."

Friese and Odar, both alumni of the University of Television & Film Munich, have established themselves with successful projects like "The Silence" (2010) and "Who Am I," which premiered at TIFF and earned multiple awards including three German Movie Awards and a Bambi. Odar’s Hollywood debut, "Sleepless," starring Jamie Foxx, is set for release in 2017.

The production company behind "Dark," Wiedemann & Berg, was founded in 2003 by Quirin Berg and Max Wiedemann during their studies. Their debut film "The Lives of Others" received an Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film, paving the way for further successes like "Who Am I" and numerous prestigious awards, including Bafta, César, and German Film Awards.

Netflix, the world's leading streaming platform with over 83 million members across more than 190 countries, continues to invest in diverse original series, documentaries, and films. Subscribers enjoy unlimited viewing on multiple devices, with the freedom to watch anytime, anywhere—without ads or commitments.
