The Fortress is one of the most significant features of the Path of Exile 2 endgame, serving as the gateway to the massive Atlas Passive Tree. As players explore its interconnected regions, they unlock permanent bonuses that enhance future map runs and create countless opportunities for specialization. Equipping reliable POE2 Items before entering the Fortress is highly recommended, as the enemies and bosses become increasingly dangerous with every new layer.

Rather than offering a simple sequence of maps, the Fortress presents a progression-focused experience. Every completed objective, from standard maps to pinnacle boss encounters, rewards Atlas Passive Points that allow players to shape their Atlas around their favorite mechanics and farming strategies.

Beginning Your Fortress Expedition

Players first enter the Fortress through the Ancient Gateway. This opening area introduces the first layer, where regular maps reward Atlas Passive Points and gradually reveal additional points of interest.

One of the earliest destinations is the Burning Monolith. Although this location is home to the Arbiter of Ash, players cannot challenge the boss immediately. To unlock the encounter, they must first obtain two special fragments.

The fragments are earned by defeating the bosses within the Western Gateway and Eastern Gateway. Completing both maps not only provides the required fragments but also unlocks the Fortress's second layer, allowing players to continue their endgame progression.

Advancing to the Origin Tower

After defeating the Arbiter of Ash, players gain access to the second layer of the Fortress. The centerpiece of this region is the Origin Tower, where the Arbiter of Divinity awaits.

Before facing this powerful boss, players must first clear the Western and Eastern Enigma Chambers. These difficult encounters reward the Origin Spark and Origin Cradle, both of which are needed to activate the Arbiter of Divinity fight.

Players should also explore the Fortress perimeter to locate Precursor Towers. These optional areas contain minibosses that reward four additional Atlas Passive Points, making them valuable objectives for anyone seeking to complete the Atlas Tree.

Expanding the Atlas Passive Tree

The Atlas Passive Tree grows as players complete Fortress milestones. The first section becomes available immediately after reaching the endgame, while later sections unlock through major boss victories.

Defeating the Arbiter of Ash opens the second section of the tree, and clearing both Enigma Chambers unlocks the third. The highest Passive Points become available only after defeating the Arbiter of Divinity, allowing players to complete the entire Atlas progression system.

The tree supports a wide variety of playstyles by offering bonuses for Essences, Strongboxes, Rogue Exiles, Shrines, Azmeri Wisps, Summoning Circles, Precursor Tablets, Waystones, and many other mechanics. This flexibility encourages players to tailor their Atlas to match their preferred activities.

Maximizing Atlas Progress

While completing standard Fortress maps steadily rewards Atlas Passive Points, pinnacle encounters remain the fastest source of progression. Repeated victories over the Arbiter of Divinity can provide large batches of Passive Points, dramatically reducing the time needed to finish the Atlas.

Trade League players may purchase an Origin Spark and Origin Cradle—or an Origin Core—to activate the Precursor Reactor beneath the Origin Tower. Solo Self-Found players instead collect these materials naturally by defeating bosses found within Patriarch and Matriarch Halls scattered throughout the endless Atlas.

Preparing for the Ultimate Challenge

Before considering your Atlas complete, revisit any remaining Precursor Towers to collect the last available Passive Points. Completing every objective ensures your Atlas Passive Tree reaches its full potential and provides maximum benefits for future mapping sessions.

As your build continues to evolve, browsing POE 2 Mirror of Kalandracan be an effective way to find equipment upgrades and valuable crafting materials. Combined with a fully unlocked Atlas Passive Tree, stronger gear will help you tackle the most difficult encounters that Path of Exile 2 has to offer.
